So confused! Advice please?

I met this guy and we dated for a few weeks and we both seemed to really like each other. We texted a lot. He was always super sweet and always hinted at future dates when we went out. Recently he asked me to be his date for a work banquet. I agreed to go. Then randomly the next day he told me he was sorry but things could not work with us. He told me i was too young for him and he didnt want to hurt me. (i'm only a couple yrs younger) Then I told him to tell me the truth and he said it mainly was bc he was struggling with bad habits and that i was too good for him. He apologized & told me several times that maybe we could get together again once he got his life in shape. I said i hoped we would talk again and he said "i'm sure we will, I just need time to fix myself". I know he had an another girlfriend which ended probably a month or so ago. I havent heard from him since, but it has not been that long. Opinions please on everything. do u think i'll hear from him again? Why was it so random!
