Is it true that it is now illegal to light up...?

I was just told that you can no longer light up a wood burning fireplace. Is there any truth to this? And if so, is there ever a good day to light up? And, is there an environmentally safe way to light up a wood burning fireplace? Thanks...just trying to be responsible.
