When to use prefixes when it comes to naming compounds ?

when to use prefixes when it comes to naming compounds ? I thought that it can be only used with covalent compounds BUT there are a few examples which I have come across that used prefixes with METALS as well, such as CrO3 (Chromium trioxide)
