What does this say about his personality, if anything?

My family recently met my older sisters new boyfriend this past summer when she came home to visit, it was the first time we've met him. We all thought he was a decent man although we all had to admit that we thought he looked, a little, well odd), he treats my sister and her three kids good (from what we can see), although he seems to be jealous of my sisters relationship with her oldest daughter. Anyhow, while they were down they were staying at my sisters, and I went over to visit. While there, me and another one of my sisters (not oldest) were sitting around a fire with our sisters boyfriend, I happened to make a comment about her new puppy, and the boyfriend, said, "I found it really funny that the puppy got when _____ was playing with him earlier, I found this really funny for the dog to get ". The name I omitted is that of my oldest sisters young daughter. Me and my sister just gave each other an odd look, because we found this to be an obviously odd thing to say. Anyhow, can this suggest anything about his personality that we should be wary of??
